Art by Gerald Wright
Gerry Wright paints landscapes exclusively in oils, and his work is frequently completed "alla prima". He prefers location or "plein air" to studio painting for its freshness and spontaneity.
His strongest painting influences come from the French and American impressionists for their daring composition, the build up of paint with rapid, textured brushmarks, and their use of high-keyed colour, which all combines to render an extraordinarily convincing effect of outdoor light and atmosphere. Some of his favourite artists are: Claude Monet (French) whose illuminated canvases changed the direction of painting in the nineteenth century and still inspire artists today; Childe Hassam (American) for his ability to paint anything and everything colourfully and convincingly, and Tom Thompson (Canadian) for his wonderful sense of design and fearless use of colour.
My art in essence is an extension of my love for the outdoors. My challenge is to find artistic design within nature's randomness, and order within chaotic beauty, and to do this within the limitations of paint. I paint because I must.
