Of his work John says: "Although I work within the traditional framework of still-life, figure and landscape, the more vital subjects of my paintings are color, shape and the rhythms I create to give my paintings a unique and dynamic life-force. When I have completed a painting it feels alternately mysterious and familiar, not unlike meeting a stranger I feel I have met before - a sense of recognition in the midst of the unknown."
