Art by Paul Saindon
Beauty is everywhere, and painting is one way of highlighting it. I call myself a figurative impressionist. I paint the human figure, landscapes, interiors, or portraits by "sculpting" light, i.e. by using the various qualities of colour and light. The structure of my drawings and paintings is also important - I prefer an asymmetric composition, generally, as it seems more dynamic then one which is square and centered.
Paul Saindon uses plein air painting and painting figures from life to study colour, contrasts and form. Sketches, pochados and photos are all used as reference material in his studio. When painting outdoors, he uses acrylics in the spring and summer, and alkyds and watercolours in the fall and winter. He tries to suggest a form rather that defining it completely, as the viewer will find it more interesting to discover it as viewing it.
Saindon works with primary colours mainly - warm and cold reds, blues and yellows. Starting with a random splatter of spots and marks on the ground, he builds up using the transparency of the medium. He leaves visible brushstrokes on the surface, but the ground marks often show through, creating passages one could never have imagined.
